Lamu Island | A hidden gem

Before heading to Kenya, I most definitely didn’t know that it had an Island with such rich history. I think about my time in Lamu so often, and hope to go back again and again. Here is why I loved it so much…

Our Airbnb

Hands down one of the most stunning places I have stayed in, the whole house was filled with open-plan patios and dark wood, with views of the water from all sides. Everyone knows where you stay matters, it affects how you wake up and the homely feeling you feel when you’d had a great day exploring knowing you’re coming back to a stunning home to rest in. That was definitely the case here.

Lamu Town

Lamu Town was so interesting to me, it felt slightly familiar with the call of prayer because we had arrived on Friday, the traditional clothes looked a lot like what I have seen in Sudan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and more. But the community not only had Arab roots, but also Swahili roots, with Islam being introduced into the area in the 9th century due to trade with the Arab and Persian world.
